APPENDIX C: Small Group and Ministry Discussion Guide
Six sessions, one per chapter. Each session is designed for a 45–60 minute gathering of new believers, a discipleship class, or a small group.
Session One — Why We Hesitate
Open by inviting participants to share, without judgment, what has made Bible study feel intimidating to them personally. Read 2 Timothy 1:7 aloud in both KJV and Amplified. Close by having each participant name one specific fear they are releasing this week.
Session Two — Meeting the Word Again
Discuss as a group what tends to crowd out Bible study during busy seasons. Invite (without requiring) anyone to share a season when they drifted from Scripture. Read Revelation 3:19 aloud and discuss the absence of shame in God’s invitation to return.
Session Three — Getting to Know Your Bible
If possible, bring several Thompson Chain Reference Bibles for participants to explore hands-on. Walk through the alphabetical topic index together and practice locating a chain number as a group.
Session Four — Following the Chain
As a group, choose one topic and follow its chain reference together, verse by verse, using the five-step process from Chapter 4. Discuss what the group notices across the linked passages.
Session Five — Building a Rhythm
Have each participant identify one existing daily routine they could attach a Scripture habit to. Discuss the difference between a goal sized for a good day versus a goal sized for a hard day. Pair participants as accountability partners before closing.
Session Six — From Information to Intimacy
Discuss as a group the difference between feeling informed and feeling close to God after a study session. Close the six-session series with two minutes of shared silence in prayer, each participant simply speaking to God about what they have learned.
