The Well, the Pool, and the Tombs

Every chapter in this book has sounded the alarm. But an alarm without a door is just noise. God always pairs the alarm with an invitation. This chapter is that invitation, told through three encounters where Jesus met a human being at their exact point of need and changed everything.

The Woman at the Well: The Thirsty Soul

John 4:6-7 — KJV
Now Jacob’s well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well: and it was about the sixth hour. There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith unto her, Give me to drink.

It is noon — the hottest part of the day. This woman came alone at midday, which tells you everything about how she was regarded. She had five husbands and was living with a man who was not her husband. And Jesus was sitting at her well. Not by accident.

“He knew everything about her. He went to her anyway. That is not religion. That is grace.”
John 4:13-14 — KJV
Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again: but whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.
pege (Strong’s #G4077): A fountain, a spring of living water welling up from within — used by Jesus to describe the permanent, internal transformation that genuine salvation produces.

She received it. She left her waterpot and ran back to the city. And what did she say? Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ? (John 4:29) She was the first evangelist of the New Testament.

The Man at the Pool: The Waiting Soul

John 5:5-7 — KJV
And a certain man was there, which had an infirmity thirty and eight years… Jesus saith unto him, Wilt thou be made whole?

Thirty-eight years of lying beside a pool that was supposed to heal him. When Jesus asked “Wilt thou be made whole?” his answer was not yes. His answer was an explanation of why it had not happened yet.

John 5:8-9 — KJV
Jesus saith unto him, Rise, take up thy bed, and walk. And immediately the man was made whole, and took up his bed, and walked.
eutheos (Strong’s #G2112): Immediately, at once, straightway — used repeatedly in the Gospels to describe the instant transformation that follows genuine response to the word of Jesus Christ.
“Thirty-eight years at the pool and Jesus healed him in a moment. It is never too late to respond to His word.”

The Man Among the Tombs: The Destroyed Soul

Mark 5:2-5 — KJV
…a man with an unclean spirit, Who had his dwelling among the tombs; and no man could bind him, no, not with chains… always, night and day, he was in the mountains, and in the tombs, crying, and cutting himself with stones.

This is the man the world had given up on. And Jesus crossed the Sea of Galilee to get to him.

Mark 5:15 — KJV
And they come to Jesus, and see him that was possessed with the devil, and had the legion, sitting, and clothed, and in his right mind: and they were afraid.

Sitting. Clothed. In his right mind. The same man. Completely, irrevocably, immediately transformed by the presence and power of Jesus Christ.

Mark 5:19 — KJV
Howbeit Jesus suffered him not, but saith unto him, Go home to thy friends, and tell them how great things the Lord hath done for thee, and hath had compassion on thee.

The man who had no voice of his own became a preacher. The man who lived among the dead became a witness to the living.

“You are not beyond recovery. Jesus crossed a sea to find the man the world had already buried. He has not stopped crossing.”

“Wilt thou be made whole?”
