The Condition the Church Stopped Preaching

Grace is the most beautiful word in the Christian vocabulary. It is also the most abused. Because in the hands of a culture that wants the benefits of God without the surrender He requires, grace has been slowly, quietly redefined — from the power that transforms a life into the permission that excuses one.

The lie sounds like this: “God is too loving to send anyone to hell. His grace covers everything. As long as you believe in God somewhere in your heart, you are fine.”

What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?
me genoito (Strong’s #G1096 + negative): The strongest Greek expression of rejection — “May it never be!” Used by Paul to shut down the misuse of grace.

The Condition That Grace Has Always Carried

Grace has never been unconditional in the sense that it requires nothing. It is unconditional in its offer — extended to all, regardless of merit. But it has always carried a condition of reception. You must receive it. And receiving it is not passive.

John 1:12 — KJV
But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name.
lambano (Strong’s #G2983): To take, to receive, to seize hold of. An active, deliberate act — not passive absorption or inherited position.
“You can sit in the presence of grace your entire life and never take hold of it.”

What Surrender Actually Looks Like

metanoia (Strong’s #G3341): Repentance — a genuine change of mind that produces a change of direction. Not sorrow alone, but an actual turning away from sin and toward God.
Acts 3:19 — KJV
Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord.

Repent and be converted. Both are necessary. Repentance is the turning. Conversion is the transformation that follows.

The Ungodly Life and the Assumption of Heaven

1 Corinthians 6:9-10 — KJV
Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived…

Be not deceived. Paul knew this deception was coming. He preemptively named it. The person who has truly received grace is not sinlessly perfect. But they are not unchanged either. The grace that saves is the grace that sanctifies.
